One Last Post…

I keep getting emails asking me to renew this blog (which I’ve ignored) and it’s going to expire in like a week, prompting me to want to end it with reasonable last post.

I haven’t bought a trading card since July 2018 and I’ve finally fallen off with all of the tcgs I once played…

Life however, has gone on and I’ve found other hobbies to fill the hole in my life. The whole thing I can say I truly regret is the distance that formed between me and the friends I made through Yugioh and Magic. It’s been pretty sad and awkward as I struggle to find other common ground to talk about.

Regardless, I’m still happy. I didn’t sell any of my decks and plan to keep them all for memory’s sake at least until I can no longer do so. Also if the opportunity to play Goat format Yugioh or EDH ever comes up, I’d still gladly accept it.

This post is a final summary to close this blog.

Thanks for reading about my experiences with card games through all the ups and downs…

It’s only due to a mix of sleep deprivation, extreme happiness and slight intoxication that’s finally getting me to address the elephant in the room. I haven’t posted here in almost 2 months. The world of card games has changed while I remained inert and silent. Banlists dropped, formats changes and did buy plenty of product, but I did it all in silence. Why you may ask? Well I realized something pretty important. Trying to play and collect all of these card games was already a pipe dream. Maintaining interest and following set releases is really hard. That’s why I started to branch out and hire guest writers (who I actually paid) to specialize in each game. Still even that was impossible to keep up. What happened to make things so difficult? Well it was quite simple really. I finished college.

During my time in school I could devote my money and far too much of my time to all this card game stuff. Summer 2017 brought me into the world of adulthood wherein even following ONE card game is a challenge. When you combine that with how honestly on the fringe I was with most of these games, it became pretty likely that I wouldn’t be able to follow them. That being said there was a time when I truly cared about this blog. It would be wrong to just let it die quietly.

So here’s:

  • My 5 AM unfiltered thoughts on each card game as of right now
  • Literally every major card game event/thing that happened to me since my last post
  • My thoughts on the recent Yugioh banlists (Can you believe I missed those? Geez)

Unfiltered Thoughts:

My fanatical love of this game and franchise is unquestionable. The floor of my apartment has been coated in Yugioh cards for weeks at a time.

My collection of anime decks has long surpassed 100 completed decks. I’ve got them all organized by series in the corner of my room now.

It’s a 100% established fact that Yugioh is my favorite trading card game. I’ve even been dabbling back and forth with meta…

(aka bricking) but I still consider myself  both a very die-hard and eccentric collector.

Magic the Gathering

Magic will always be my second favorite game. It has a richness and depth that both intrigues and terrifies me. I know almost every Yugioh that exists. I don’t know half of the Magic cards that exist. Since I moved to my new apartment my Yugioh cads have littered the floor while my Magic cards have gone untouched. I like watching Magic (especially StarCityGames replays) that much I know. However when it comes down to playing it I barely do or try to. All of my passion for

Status: Actively Following Standard and Modern, Infrequent Play due to Yugioh

And now for all of those other games…

I have never liked that in Pokemon it feels like comebacks are infrequent. Once you’re losing in prize cards it feels impossible to catch up. And yes I know there are supporter/trainer cards that support the losing player. They just don’t feel like enough to me. Also actually watching Pokemon feels like Legacy or Vintage Magic to me. I just can’t play the game anymore and I haven’t followed it in months. My deck has long since rotated.

Status: Has 2 rotated decks and half a binder, Not Collecting or Playing

Force of Will

I honestly loved this game. I gave it a lot of time, money and attention all for it to completely fail me. I sold all but my most beloved cards from the era in which I played. Some swell chap in Germany bought my whole collection on Ebay. I pray those cards are serving him well. I occasionally see spoilers for new cards and to be honest I loved playing Force of Will (my decks still exist), but I don’t think I’ll be playing it ever again.

Status: Morally opposed to it in every way, has a binder and 2 decks as a keepsake

Naruto was a weird mix of Pokemon and Magic that I honestly found very enjoyable. Unfortunately Naruto died in like 2013 and there’s no changing that. I only ever had one friend (after Middle school) who played/collected the cards and he’s back in New Jersey. These cards now rest in half of a binder while I ponder how to get rid of my bulk.

Status: Half of keepsake binder and 2 tins of unwanted bulk left

My Little Pony

I never gave this game a fair attempt. We played it incorrectly a few times (trying to force multiplayer), and I think I only played it normally twice. This game was just a bit tedious and the only novelty was that concept of “fighting” with the ponies. Oddly enough all my decks are still built, but this game is likely to waste away in my storage box.

Status: Like 6 decks just lying around

Cardfight Vanguard

I don’t like playing this game. I really like the artwork of certain cards and I enjoyed collecting those cards (back when I had money to throw away). However, now I can’t say I would ever willingly play Cardfight. The gameplay just upsets me and I don’t know if that will ever change. I do still love the Bermuda Triangle and Angel cards. Somehow I never made a binder for them though.

Status: 2 large piles of cards that really need a binder

Wixoss died when my friend Kenny vanished. He was the biggest advocate for this game. Without him I lost all interest as did my friend group. I stopped following the show and the sets. My decks are still together, but Kenny took all my other cards so those 4 decks are all I have left.

Status: Selector Abandoned Wixoss

Weiss Schwarz

Weiss is the best card game to not play. I love getting cards of my favorite anime characters because I’m a colossal nerd. Just having the cards makes me happy. Actually playing the game however has never worked out. With the exception of one Sword Art Online player, EVERY PERSON I’ve ever played Weiss with has gotten incredibly mad during the course of the game due to a bad card flip or pull. Like they would get so angry that I would feel uncomfortable. This made Weiss increasingly unpleasant to play so I dismantled all my decks. I still love the cards, but adding to a Weiss binder is all I plan to do if even that.

Status: One binder filled to capacity (also these status posts sure have degraded over time huh?)

Fire Emblem Cipher

Uh I learned how to play this at 2 AM. I remember nothing about how to play. I’m not a Fire Emblem fan, THOUGH I am enjoying the phone game so that may change. I can’t really comment on the game.

Status: I swear I have these cards somewhere…)

What happened:

Philly Regional

I attended the Philly Regional on September 9th. I borrowed a friend’s True Draco Demise deck. This is a chunk of it.

20170908_205027I went 4-4-1 and placed 140th out of  roughly 500. While not great this was the highest I’ve ever placed in Philly.

Ixalan Pre-Release

I attended the Ixalan Pre-release immediately before writing this post. I went 3-0-1 running Jund Dinosaurs (because I do what I want).

I split with round 4 opponent so we could each get the most packs.

This is the second time I’ve ever done so well at a pre-release. I haven’t gone 3-0-1 since Dragon’s Maze.

I’ve constructed a number of yugioh anime decks.

Along with buying The Ur-Dragon Commander 2017 pre-con. Ur-Dragon has since replaced Progentitus as my commander.

I bought a box of Battle of Light’s Revenge and multiple 2017 Starter decks.

I opened Triple Dimensional Barrier in 3 Mega Tins. Honestly it was a good haul all around.

I’ve bought the entire Yugioh collections of two people and absorbed most of the cards from a third person.

And I got to watch a Hane-Hane get hit by Raigeki

There is probably more, but I can’t think of anything else right  now.

Yugioh September 18th 2017 Banlist (TCG)

Zoo died the death it deserved ages ago finally opening the format up to new strategies. True Draco is still viable as Master Peace Turbo. Dinosaurs are now OTK or bust. Lightsworns can sack better. Most of the other hits are irrelevant. There are tons of cards that should’ve been hit also, but I still like this banlist.

Whelp my eyes hurt…. like a lot. It’s time to stop.

What’s next for this blog? I honestly don’t know. I doubt I’ll have time to give it the attention it deserves. It may die. It may not. I thank you regardless for following the mad adventures of one man in his quest to perish suffocated under cardboard.

Thanks for reading as usual.

Too much to say with no time nor energy to say it (Katsucon 2015 Loot)

I had a phenomenal time at Katsucon 2015 at the Gaylord Hotel in Maryland this weekend. I got spend a lot of time with of my closest friends and caught up with many friends that moved far away. In addition I drove into many new dimensions of card gaming.

Assorted rares from the $1 Magic rare box alongside cards I traded out of my EDH deck for (I traded lands I had duplicates of). Only 1 Shockland away from a complete set (Where’s a Stomping Ground?).

I cracked a box of The Secret Forces. I’m beyond lucky since I pulled a Brionac. While selling him is very enticing I’m going to see if my pre-ordered box makes building Nekroz still possible).

I split a box of Wixoss with the friend mentioned in the earlier (and likely all) Wixoss posts. I opened a myriad of new Eldora support and the deck has even more combos and options than before (I just remembered I never explained Wixoss, whoops).

So my friends forgot their own Vanguard decks so I bought an English version of my own so we could still play.

So the big news, I have bought my 1st deck of Weiss Schwarz. Despite initially being skeptical (and of course already having too many cards already) I’ve found the game very fun and enticing. Like with all card games comparison posts and such will come in the future.

I can’t go into details now, but plans are changing, different paths are being explored and tough decisions are about to be made. I’ll do a “New Plans” post tomorrow to get the ball rolling on this new era of card games.

Janky Sultai Whip Standard deck post

So while rummaging through my yugioh tins I found an EDH/Commander deck I made a while back. I have the habit of never taking apart old decks I’ve made. Instead, I just leave them in a tin like a time capsule to uncover a few months later. Anyway, I found a Sultai EDH deck I made with Sidisi, Brood Tyrant as its commander. I was beyond excited to build this deck when Khans of Tarkir first came out and bought a lot of cards for it. However, I stopped playing it pretty quickly.

Admittedly, I’m not very good at making Magic decks due to lack of knowledge of older cards. Though of all the decks I’ve ever made this one has failed me the most. It all came back to me last Friday after the draft. I invited a buddy over to test his Merfolk EDH deck and decided to use my old EDH decks against him. Then I remembered the flaws of my build (which you can see fully here). As much as I love the Sultai (my 2nd favorite clan) and Sidisi, making a few 2/2 zombies in EDH turned out to be pointless. I could never get the right ratio of mill to recursion to make this deck potent. Every time I’ve played it I ended up watching everyone else do broken things while I sat around without enough mana or cards in grave to play anything.

So what’s the point of all this? Well at this point I’ve spent a total of $6 to get all the creatures for the Brutal Hordechief deck I was planning to make. However, I’m strongly considering taking the Sidisi EDH deck apart to build Sultai whip in Standard. The money cards I would have to acquire would:

3 Courser of Kruphix

3 Yavimiya Coast

2 Temple of Deceit

4 Temple of Malady

3 Sylvan Caryatid

There are definitively a lot more cards I’d need, but these come to mind first. The main issue I’m seeing with building the B/W warrior deck right now is that just like my former Mono-Red deck it would fold almost instantly to Drown in Sorrow.

And the last thing I want to do is build another deck that auto-loses to that card. I still love Brutal Hordechief, I’m just not sure about playing him in standard anymore.

Anyway, I apologize for rambling. If anything I’ll make a Sultai standard deck by taking this EDH apart first and foremost. Where things go from there I’m not sure. Thanks for reading.

A discussion about Naruto Cards?!

So I got the chance to play Naruto cards for the first time this year on Thursday. I thought I would discuss some aspects of the game briefly and relate it to the other TCGs I play. I’ plan to make this into a series about relating different card game mechanics.

Card Types:

So in Naruto, you control the various ninjas from the Naruto world as your monsters/creatures.

You strengthen your Ninjas through the use of the 2 other types of cards. Missions and Jutsus.

Missions are like spell cards (or enchantments). They provide a myriad of simple to incredibly convoluted effects when played.

Jutsus are like Traps/Instants however they can only be used in Ninjas are fighting.

Card Costs:

Naruto balances their cards by preventing the playing of  cards until a certain number of turns have passed.

You need to wait until the corresponding turn to play your ninja similar to playing a Magic creature on curb (assuming you don’t miss a mana drop).

The more expensive cards not only take longer to be played, but they also require you to discard a card from your hand to play them (This is referred to as Hand Cost).

I’ll discuss Naruto’s Game Mechanics in a later post. The game ended in 2013 long before the manga did. The cards relatively cheap and I would recommend them to any Naruto card (even if just to get your favorite character). I plan to do more talks about the similarities in trading card game design in the near future. Thanks for stopping by.

New Cards New Plans (Part 3)

Ok, so here is the last part of my New Plans series. This will be a rather quick post though tonight I’ll have my usual FNM summary post (In addition this weekend I’ll do a non-Yugioh/Magic post for once).

So what essentially brought me into this state was a huge sale I made on Ebay recently. I had multiple lot for 500 Yugioh cards set up for Buy It Now. On Saturday the 31st three of those 500 card listings sold at once.

These are the 1500 cards I sold on Tuesday. After making this sale my collection of spare Yugioh commons was decently hit. I’m pretty sure that after a few more sales I’ll actually run out of spare Yugioh cards. However, this has also spurred me to make as many decks left as possible with the spare cards I have left. As of right now I’m working on the following Yugioh decks (all of these decks are intended to be casual):

X-Sabers (I had a decent number of the commons, the new SECH rare and every Synchro other than Hyunlei. As of right now all I’ve done is purchase 2 Fautroll, 1 Boggart Knight, a playset of Darksoul and of Emmersblade)

Constellars (I’ve only bought 1 Constellar Pleiades and that’s also the constellar I’ll own. I do have some decent Light support like Honest lying around though)

Bandit Keith Machines (An excuse for me to run Barrel Dragon in a deck. So far I bought a Blowback Dragon, but that’s it)

B.E.S. (I have a lot of the ships and I love the art/concept)

My aspiration is build all of these without breaking $20 between staples and deck specific cards (in total). The only pricey cards are the entire Constellar Core and very specifically XX – Saber Hyunlei. This is not expected to interfere with my quest to build an actual competitive Yugioh deck. I’m getting a 3rd Hero deck through a friend and then I’ll make deck edits accordingly. After a bit of play-testing I already have ideas for what to change.

Magic the Gathering:

I have made my decision to play Black/White Warriors in Standard or a least attempt it. I’ve already bought all the Fate Reforged Warriors and I’ve bid on multiple Caves of Koilos. In addition I’m scrapping getting a Fate Reforged box in favor of buying Ugin, The Spirit Dragon separately (that being said at the time of posting this he’s treanding at $30 so I might not get him anytime soon).

Depending on how it plays I may switch to either Black/Red or to straight Mardu. However, the major issue will always be that I don’t want to buy a Play-set of Thoughtseize.

The iteration of the deck can be found here. Like with my Hero deck in Yugioh much play testing and edits are needed.

This has more or less been a series of posts to summarize my thoughts. I don’t expect them to have been very engaging, but they were good for my own sanity. Thanks for reading.

New Cards New Plans (Part 2)

So my plans have changed as dictated in the last post.

This is my 1st build for Masked Heroes in Yugioh (until I either open a huge amount of Nekroz or randomly acquire Infernoid Ununcu)SDC12929-001

^This is literally the first iteration of the deck and I’m sure it will change with the format. At the time of making this I only bought 2 of the Structure deck.

Deck Profile and My Thoughts:

I split the monsters up between what I can Play Makers and Enablers. In a nutshell you use the Enablers to Special Summon or Search the Play Makers.

Play Makers:

Elemental Hero Shadow Mist x2 (You’re basic playmaker in the deck. I may go up to 3 once I get a 3rd structure deck)

Elemental Hero Bubble Man x2 (Might also go up to 3, he’s the 2nd playmaker and the only target for Shadow Mist at the moment)

Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn x1 (This is my attempt at making my deck stand out from the other thousands of hero decks. He might be a weak leg, but here’s my reasons for running him:

  • He’s a light target for Mask Change II and far more desirable card than Neos Alius
  • He’s a Tuner which adds Lv 8 Synchros as options
  • He’s a Warrior and thus is searchable with ROTA

All that being said he’ll probably be the 1st thing to get cut as I make changes

Tin Goldfish x2 (He’s a target for Mask Change II for Masked Hero Acid, the 2nd best Masked Hero)

Goblindbergh x3 (Again questionable, but he’s searchable off ROTA and gives you the necessary Special Summon. 3 may be excessive though)

Summoner Monk x2 (Probably my favorite due to this deck’s high spell count, can also go into Raiden)

12 Monsters Total

I broke the spells up into the following categories:

  • The Mask Cards get you to Dark Law
  • The ROTAs get you to Shadow Mist
  • The Graveyard Abuse is for the mid-late game
  • The Reactive Cards to get an advantage in the early game

Mask Cards:

Mask Change x3 (Key Spell of the deck)

Mask Change II x2 (Key troll card of the deck, Konami may have made Dark Law a splash-able engine by itself with this card)

Mask Charge x2 (It’s like they took The Warrior Returning Alive and made it eons better)

E – Emergency Call x3 (Staple)

Reinforcements of the Army x3 (Staple)

A HERO Lives x2 (Not sure if I should bump this up to 3)

Graveyard Abuse:

Miracle Fusion x3 (This is my favorite card in Heroes, I’m just biased towards it)

Soul Charge x1 (One of the most powerful cards they’ve ever made)

Reactive Cards:

Enemy Controller x1 (Given the control switching nature of the format this felt appropriate)

Mystical Space Typhoon x3 (Qliphort is waiting behind every corner)

Forbidden Chalice x2 (Feels better than Breakthrough Skill at the moment)

Forbidden Lance x1 (Not sure honestly)

Snatch Steal (Why Not)

Compulsory Evacuation Device (OMG A TRAP?! It felt like the best one to include)

Spells: 27

Traps: 1

Moving onto the Extra Deck:

I’m not 100% on the Extra Deck right now which is why there are 16 cards shown.

Definitely Running:

Masked Hero Dark Law x2 (The heart and soul of Masked Heroes, designed to wreck Burning Abyss every day of the week)

Masked Hero Acid x1 (Harpies Feather Duster on a 2600 body)

Masked Hero Dian x1 (Very interesting in my opinion and a Mask Change II target for Goblindbergh)

Elemental HERO Absolute Zero x1 (Another Raigeki)

Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer x1 (The best Rank 4 xyz, just going to leave that claim there)

Elemental HERO Gaia x1 (Honestly, not too happy about him from the onset)

Elemental HERO Escuridao x1 (Really not happy with this one, but unlike Gaia I feel Escuridao is mandatory since he’s so easy to summon)

Elemental HERO The Shining x1 (I love the Shining, he’s recursion ability is amazing. I only wish I had more targets)

Heroic Champion Excalibur x1 (4000 attack to wreck Towers)

Masked Hero Koga x1 (Basically un-killable in battle)

Unsure of Section:

Contrast HERO Chaos x1 (He feels good, but I think if I’ve burned through 2 Masked Heros I’ve already lost)

Stardust Spark Dragon x1 (In all honesty I want him just so my Extra Deck can have a card of each type, Fusions, Synchros and Xyzs)

Abyss Dweller x1 (Because with Bubble Man he’s a 2200 Graveyard stopper)

Evilswarm Exciton Knight (Because boardwipe)

Blade Armor Ninja (This guy loses out to Heroic Champion in my book, just because Champion outs Apoqliphort Towers and this card does not). Actually I think he’s definitely the one to cut while writing this.

Anyway this is my first attempt at a new age competitive deck. At some point I’ll reminisce about Blackwings and my recent stint with Lightsworn Rulers, but this is my first time betting on a structure deck. In the meantime I’m going to start play-testing this deck. Hopefully, I can track its growth on this blog to see how it develops.

I threw the side together at random so it’ll need to change a bit too.  Thanks for reading.
